Decoding Faultlines in Rakhine, Myanmar

2014 Census Report did not include around 1.2 million Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine.

The Government of Myanmar opines that the Rohingya are illegal settlers who arrived during the British colonial era, and were originally Bengalis. The Rohingya claim ancestral ownership. More conservative strains of the religion from the Middle East prophesies of orthodox Islam and locals suspect this as a major factor in the recent conflict of state forces with Rohingya terrorist whey they tried disturbing the law and order situation. In 2017, over 740,000 fled to Bangladesh, an estimated 1.4 million Rohingya lived in Myanmar. Kutupalong, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, became the world's largest refugee camp housing approximately 711,364 Rohingya refugees. An estimated 500,000-600,000 Rohingya inhabit Rakhine State.
